Cleaning up the streets
on June 23, 2013 at 11:45 pmEdit: I improved this comic based on your suggestions! Thank you! What do you think?
Courtney:
Busy day for the cops down here! Also, there’s nothing that really SCREAMS pirate about that salamandrian, but racial profiling is a rampant problem in Idenau…
This comic caused me a world of trouble – I drew most of it in the car (it wasn’t TOO hard with my current tablet) on a road trip, and the file got corrupted more than once, causing me to lose at least an hour and a half of work. Anyway, vacation was nice but it’s really good to be back home with Victor. Even getting in late and going straight to work the next day isn’t too bad, because I quite like where I work now!
Well, that worked better than expected, huh?
I’m amazed the police believed Cyril could knock anyone out, but if they have a chance to arrest pirates, they won’t ask questions.
wow that right there is pretty sad….
They’ll just have to knock out more pirates to trigger the police.
how are the police like on the sceen ASAP its like there were already there waiting on people to get mugged….
Perhaps they have a hard time following them cause every time the police talk to them the game doesn’t let you move until they have vanished around the corner. They just have to ask people for directions just like everyone else!
I really like how do the designs on the flish and salamandarians.
Thanks! I started out trying to base them all on real patterns I found in betta fish and salamanders, but it’s more important to me that I don’t repeat color schemes, so I’ve gone a little more out there =P
To be fair, that human really DOES look like a filthy pirate. Also, it’s really nice to have a job you like. I hope it goes well for you!
Nice to have you back. ^^ Glad vacation was nice.
…drawing in the car sucks. So much. …but I have fond memories of the “Welcome Mat” strip.
It’s one of those following-type quests! : D
Is it just me, or does it look like they’re going to run headfirst into that sky blue wall? haha
I think that is the portal those police came out of… They keep appearing whenever something happens, so maybe they just use portals.
Hm. Well, actually, if you look at the first panel, it looks like a normal set of walls. Well, as normal as these strange, tight corridors between buildings outside can be…but on three and six, it looks like that blue wall is roughly flush with the green and purple. So…I don’t know.
Wait, did you really think that was a wall?
It’s just emptiness between buildings, the way back out of the alley. (Hence why it’s sky blue, because it’s the sky.) Maybe I can do something to make that more clear. (Do keep telling me when something I draw isn’t communicating well!)
I think that it’s the way the bricks end abruptly right there, it looks like either a wall or a cliff (though i guess it’s supposed to be the horizon or something?)
Yeah, tonight I’ll make the bricks extend farther past the walls so it’s clear they keep going.
I can’t help but think, that if you’re at a perspective a short distance above the ground, and you’re looking mostly horizontally but at a slight down angle, and all you see is the sky, there’s probably something wrong with the world.
Well, isn’t there something wrong with the world?
But I get it. You guys are making me anxious to fix it now, but I’ll have to wait until I’m off work!
It’s not a big deal. It’s only the two of us that were confused by it, anyways…
AND EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD WHO WILL FOREVER JUDGE YOU BY THIS HORRID OVERSIGHT
No pressure.
No, seriously, it’s not a big deal. It’s actually almost kind of gamey…it’s like it’s the edge of the area. The perspective we were never supposed to see!
Reminds me of Super Paper Mario, seeing the 3D view of a 2D platformer. I can’t remember if I’ve ever talked to you about that game, but considering your stance on most things cheesey and dramatic and romantic, I imagine you hated it.
I have never played it, actually. Also, my stance on such is very…uh…schizophrenic. I love movies like Beauty and the Beast, Cats Don’t Dance, etc. but some things that fit within the same category and do the same things just bother me immensely…such as Skyward Sword. So it’s kind of hard to say whether I would like it, if you’re judging on what I’ve said about that particular Zelda.
Hm. Maybe you like movies that are like that, but not games? In movies, you’re just sitting there watching characters interact and you feel farther removed from the world than in games, where even if you’re playing as Link or Mario or whatever, you control them so you feel like it’s “you” to some extent, and you’re more involved with the action. So you might’ve felt weird about Link’s lovey-dovey relationship with Zelda in SS because you felt it was forced upon you. In SPM, none of the playable characters are directly implicated in the central romance plot (wellll…. depends on if you count one of them as “playable”). Still though, you’re interacting with it. At any rate, it’s one of my favorite games everrr and I’d recommend it on the basis of its characters and humor. But a lot of people don’t like it for various reasons. I’d be interested to hear what you thought, if you ever get around to it.
That’s certainly a possibility…and thinking over my years of gaming, I can’t really think of many games I’ve played where I went through what I did with Skyward Sword. Only examples I can think of are Dark Messiah, where you’re roped into a romance with one of two female characters…a game that I immediately quit after I figured that out because it was driving me absolutely bonkers, even though I really liked the other gameplay mechanics…Baldur’s Gate II, where your only hope for interactions with party members of the opposite gender is through romancing them, (stupid BioWare NPCs…), Mass Effect, where you’re forced into a romance in the first game unless you horribly murder them, (stupid BioWare NPCs!), Mass Effect 2, where you’re either forced to stay in the previous relationship or go into another one to get out of it, (gosh darned BioWare NPCs! Why the heck can’t I just be friends with other sentient beings? Why is the eventual goal of every relationship/friendship to fall in love with the member of said relationship? Is there no bloody middle ground with these people?), and Half-Life 2, where the deuteragonist, Alyx, occasionally says nice things to you that still disturb me to this day.
…I might have a problem, now that you mention it…
Well, I thought it was all perfectly understandable, until the bit where you’re permanently traumatized by compliments.
You’re cute, Barty.
What’s weird is that Half-Life example actually bothers me the most, as you have absolutely no control in “conversations” (as much as Mr. Freeman can have conversations, as he’s a silent protagonist), so you just kind of have to sit there and take it. The biggest flaw in an otherwise great SFPS. I still remember the things she says… The other games I could at least sort of control the conversation, or at least their presence within the group if worst comes to worst, (you’re starting to like me? Shut the door on your way out!). I generally like the individual characters who are bothering me…just not what they’re being forced to do via the coding.
Oh Barty, you are quite adorable.
Your face is adorable!
…wait
It’s like one of the roadrunner cartoons. The police can go through just fine, but whenever Cyril and Lorelei try, they crash into a wall.
Or it’s platform nine and three-quarters… In which case Lorelei should be able to make it. But poor Cyril, that muggle.
I was a bit autistic as a child, (understatement – also, I still am, but ever so slightly less so), and those cartoons always confused and bothered me. The Coyote would like paint a background for the Roadrunner to run smack into, but instead he would run and disappear into the background of it…I still have trouble thinking about the physics of it…it just doesn’t make sense.
Cyril’s not a muggle, i mean he may not be able to do most magic but he’s the only one who can work the compass. He counts as the team’s hedgewig or something at least I’d say.
That’s true! I think it’s interacting with him more than vice versa, but still, it counts for something.
Plus he has THE MAGIC OF MUSIC
Well, there goes my portal theory…… I like to think with portals.
IT LOOKS GOOD. Thanks, PJ, for taking the time out of your day to…uh, well, make comics and stuff, but also to make corrections on your comics at our whim!
Hey, it’s not like you guys are being capricious and demanding when you point out things that confuse you or look weird. It does look a whole lot better now, both in terms of making sense and being appealing.
TODAY, LORELEI SHOULD HAVE A FANCY MUSTACHE, AND CYRIL SHOULD USE A PEG LEG. GO, DO MY BIDDING.

Forget it
Uhh, that link would work, it just ended early. Highlight the whole link (including the .jpg, very important), copy it, and paste it in the address bar in a new tab.
Whoops, that was pretty condescending… Sorry about that, just a bad habit.
Aw, what is that from? It’s adorable.
First we lose the Wednesday strip, then the Friday strip is late a few hours, now it’s delayed until tonight, and by tonight, it’ll be tomorrow(?)! IF YOU THOUGHT NOBODY WOULD NOTICE, YOU WERE WRONG! WHERE’S MY COMIC!?
Oh, you added a blue house in the back background! That actually makes it look much nicer!
