Skärva is Lawful Evil
on April 9, 2013 at 11:24 pmCourtney:
Lorelei should have read the paper I wrote freshman year about how pirates have been reduced from real-life crime and complexity to a set of kid-friendly symbols for exploration and adventure. …Not that I have any problems with that. LET THE PEGLEGS COMMENCE
Oh man, I’m waiting for it with bated breath…
Also, something about the art in the last few panels is quite striking. Something about it just gives it me good sense of motion.
Well, don’t pass out between now and Friday!
Oh, you think so?! Well thanks
…he’s got a good point. :’D
I know! Where is the punchline in this comic?
And what is with everyone’s expressions in the last panel?
They’re all just holding in a sneeze. It’s allergy season!
Could’ve sworn they just wanted to puke.
Meh. oh, that’s w- BLUUUURCCCHHHH!
Should’ve asked for a bucket.
Never done an honest day of evil work. Maybe he does have a bit of his dad in him after all!
Also panel 5 makes my eyes hurt slightly but it’s countered with Lorelei reminding me heavily of steamboat mickey cartoons.. which is amusingly appropriate for this locale. Good show!
Oh, certainly.
Hm, I thought it was kind of cool looking, but if it bothers people I can change it tonight.
It is kind of cool! Very reminiscent of very old newspaper comics. Also I just realized. Derk’s the one squealing, isn’t he.
Eyup.
1. You’re a shark person.
Pirates have ‘not loved’ people for far less Skarva.
I don’t see how 1 is a problem
But yes, 2[implied] is true.
It’s hard for me to imagine any seagoing person being fine with a shark. Especially pirates since they make people walk the plank. I guess the sharks are helping them in that instance but I don’t think the pirates would want to hang out with the shark…
I feel like i’m overthinking the shark thing.
“honest day of evil work” The irony I am loving it.
Evil has its own rules to be followed!
Indeed; protection rackets vs random muggings, money laundering vs bank robberies, etc. (that’s how I’ve always envisioned the difference)
Ha, I was right! Pirates!
Y’know, I can’t help but wonder if Skärva’s narcissism is just natural, or if he does it to cover up self esteem issues. Eh, I’m probably looking too far into it.
Of course! Me and Victor have been planning a pirate arc since we started the comic.
Good question! And no, I would’t say you’re looking too far into it. Remember this?
Oh yeah, I remember. That’s what I was referring back to, actually.
I’m just wondering if his issues are every going to be addressed head on.
Maybe, maybe not. I imagine it might come to the surface at some point, but we don’t have anything planned right now.
…And the hacking. You can’t forget the hacking.
They don’t have internet pirates in Idenau because there’s no internet… not even a magical internet. (Although the internet is kinda magic already, in both very good and truly evil ways…)
If I were a pirate, I would totally help Skärva out.
He still wouldn’t like you
Eh. I’m okay with that…
Pirates!
All we need is a sparrow named jack who’s the captain of a pirate crew, then they can meet captain Jack Sparrow. XD
Somehow I think this is going to end with skärva getting chased out of town by a hoard of angry pirates just like another time, except with pirates.
“Just like another time, except with pirates” is a formula for making anything better.
When Skarva was on his rant about how bad pirates are, I totally thought that a bunch of pirates were going to hear and come over to beat some sense into him.
But, but then, the last panel–I was just laughing so hard
Skarva, Skarva, Skarva. What are we going to do with him?
I am loving Skarva in the last panel. Everything about it is just… perfect!
Agreed, that last panel, is just the absolute best.
Skarva looks like he was just MADE for that pose.
Pffah. . . Can somebody bring me a bucket before I puke please?
Thanks!
Maybe all the pirates are afraid he’ll use the shark-powers his shark-face grants him to summon a bunch of sharks and shark them to death.
SHARK POWERS ACTIVATE! *sticks out his face*
I find it really amusing and telling that those three thought meeting a pirate would be cool. Interesting social commentary there I think.
That last panel makes me laugh. Everyone’s expressions are priceless. Even Cyril can’t put a positive spin on that.
“On the new season of “The Bachelor”, we meet Lord Tiberius Skaerva the Fourth!” . . . I may actually watch that show now.
It’s certainly self-commentary
Having grown up thinking pirates are awesome, I’m interested in how a history of thievery and destruction is marketed to children as grand adventure on the high sea. (Have you ever heard that song “You Are a Pirate” from the children’s show LazyTown? Apparently what pirates do is “run and jump all day.”) Hence why I wrote a paper on it- probably the best thing I ever did for a class… not least because I got to put video games in my bibliography. “How does one cite Donkey Kong Country 2,” I got to ask myself. While trying to pick apart stereotypes from reality, I’m still interested in the romantic idea of piracy (…a huge amount of which was spawned by Treasure Island alone), and those are the tropes we’ll be playing with in this chapter. Skarva is having none of that BS, though.
Pfft, you would audition to be on it, I think.
Citing video games in essays is the best. I’m having good flashbacks to a video game essay I got to write in high school…. wonder if I still have that.
Also, just bribe the auditioners.
When I was writing that paper, I was reading a book of collected criticisms on Peter Pan and it had a whole chapter devoted to the story’s representation in Kingdom Hearts. I thought that was excellent, considering I’ve been writing tl;dr interpretations of games for years and have on occasion been accused of “thinking too much.” I wish there were more classes in which people got to study video games seriously, as they do literature and film. Me and Victor’s university did offer a class on Norse mythology in popular culture with a heavy focus on Skyrim, but neither of us could take it…
Fun classes with fun themes ROCK. I was in a senior english project class in college where we spent the whole semester analyzing Tolkien’s writings and how he’s influenced other fantasy or science fiction writers. I got to write a paper about how Tolkien puts women up on pedestals (to counter the stupid argument I’ve read in papers about how he’s sexist), as well as do a group presentation comparing Dune’s 80’s movie, the TV miniseries, and the book.
Another class I took was all about comparing books to their movie counterparts and analyzing adaptation techniques. Being both a writer and a film critic at heart, I LOVED THIS CLASS. However, I will NEVER see the Disney Pinocchio movie the same again (that kid DESERVED EVERYTHING in the book; he’s practically a saint by comparison in the film).
I would totally take that Norse class. That sounds EPIC. And I now want to take a class where I can write about Mass Effect. Heaven knows the papers I can write on that Crayola Ending . . .
Hehe, yeah forget watching. Who watches when they can COMPETE?
I quite enjoy the “See Food” shop.
At least, I hope it’s a shop and not a museum.
